Hong Kong authorities on Thursday confirmed that the death toll from a massive fire at a residential apartment complex in Tai Po has risen to 55, making it the city’s deadliest blaze in decades. Firefighters continued battling the flames for a second consecutive day at the Wang Fuk Court complex, where thick black smoke billowed from multiple high-rise towers well into Thursday noon. The fire, which started on Wednesday afternoon, spread through seven of the estate’s eight residential buildings before crews managed to bring four towers under control by morning, according to the city’s Fire Services Department.
Among the victims was a firefighter, officials said. At least 71 others were injured, many suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation. Authorities warned that firefighting operations could extend into Thursday evening as rescuers searched for survivors.
Tragic stories emerged from residents who were caught in the blaze. Lawrence Lee said he was waiting for news of his wife, who became trapped inside their flat. When the fire started, I told her over the phone to escape, but the corridor and stairway were filled with smoke. It was pitch dark, so she had no choice but to go back inside,” Lee said from a temporary shelter.
