As New Delhi seeks to finalise an early trade agreement and avoid retaliatory US tariffs, US Vice President JD Vance kicked off a four-day trip to India on Monday. Two months before to Vance’s visit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with US President Donald Trump at the White House for discussions.

When Vance emerged into the hot New Delhi sun to meet with Modi, he was met with a red carpet greeting complete with an honour guard and groups of folk dancers. On his first visit in New Delhi, 40-year-old Vance, a devoted Catholic convert who had seen Pope Francis in the Vatican the day before, took his family on a tour of a large Hindu temple.

Wearing traditional, flowing Indian clothing, the US vice president visited the Akshardham Temple with his three children and his wife, Usha, who is the daughter of Indian immigrants. On Tuesday, Vance’s itinerary will take him to Jaipur, Rajasthan, the location of the mediaeval Amber fort. The following day, he will go to Agra to see the Taj Mahal’s white marble mausoleum.

The meeting between Modi and Vance later on Monday will be more significant. According to India’s Foreign Ministry, they would “exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest” and  review the progress” in their relations. Within the 90-day tariff halt that Trump declared this month, New Delhi aims to clinch the first tranche of a trade deal between the United States and India.
