The United Arab Emirates said Tuesday that a new United Nations assessment had refuted unfounded claims that it was escalating the civil conflict in Sudan and instead called for a fresh emphasis on humanitarian aid and diplomacy.
The UAE commented on the UN Panel of Experts’ findings on Sudan in a statement released by its Permanent Mission to the UN. The UAE stated that the findings supported its long-standing position, which is that it has no involvement in arming or fueling the conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
The report does not support the baseless claims made by the SAF. It doesn’t discover anything against the United Arab Emirates. The UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, stated.
The investigation cited “widespread atrocities” by the SAF and RSF, including assaults on civilians, sexual violence associated to conflicts, and the weaponization of humanitarian supplies, the statement said. Earlier this year, the SAF filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) after accusing the UAE of inflaming the crisis in Sudan, a charge the nation has always denied.
