Ahead of an anticipated meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he will authorise the relaxation of sanctions on Syria at the request of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince.

According to a White House official, Trump will greet Sharaa in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, arranging a meeting between the president and the former Al Qaeda leader who assumed control following the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad. They will meet Wednesday morning, according to two Syrian presidential sources who spoke to Reuters.

“I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness,” Trump said at the beginning of a trip to Gulf Arab governments, speaking to an investment summit in Riyadh. Now is the moment for them to shine. Trump added, “Good luck Syria, show us something very special.” “We’re taking them all off.”

Trump claimed to have reached the decision following talks with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, both of whose administrations had vehemently called for the revocation of the sanctions.
