Less than 24 hours after a supposedly unilaterally declared Easter ceasefire ended and just over a day before Ukrainian, British, French, and US officials are scheduled to meet in London to discuss the war, local authorities reported Tuesday that Russian drones had Crux  attacked the Ukrainian port city of Odesa during the night.

The question of whether diplomatic measures can end the more than three years of conflict that have followed Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbour is becoming more and more anticipated. Since Russia invaded and unlawfully seized Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula in 2014, animosity between the two countries has been intense. In his attempt to put a stop to the gruelling conflict, Trump stated last week that talks were “coming to a head” and that neither party is “playing” him.

This followed Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s suggestion last week that if the talks don’t advance, the US may soon withdraw from them altogether. After discussions between US, Ukrainian, and European officials yielded ideas for peace-related initiatives and seemed to make some much-needed progress, he spoke in Paris.

Rubio said the upcoming meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday in London, may be crucial in deciding if the Trump administration stays involved. Oleh Kiper, the chairman of the Odesa regional government, said on his Telegram profile on Tuesday that Russian drones had launched a “massive attack” on Odesa overnight, injuring at least three people.
