According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, there is no need for nuclear weapons in Ukraine and he hopes that there never will be. In remarks shown Sunday in a Russian state television film honouring his 25 years in office, Putin said that Russia had the resources and the capacity to resolve the Ukrainian issue ” logically.”
There has been no need to use those (nuclear) weapons… and I hope they will not be required,” Putin said in response to a question concerning Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory. We possess sufficient power and resources to rationally conclude what began in 2022 with the result Russia demands,” he stated.
In November 2024, Putin approved a revised version of Russia’s nuclear policy that outlines the conditions under which he can unleash Moscow’s biggest atomic arsenal in the world. By lowering the limit, that version allowed him to respond to even a conventional attack supported by a nuclear power.
In the movie, Putin also claimed that Russia’s unlawful annexation of Crimea in 2014 did not result in a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, or what he referred to as a “special military operation,” because it was “practically unrealistic. He claimed the nation was unprepared for such a direct conflict with the West. Putin “sincerely sought to solve the problem of Donbas by peaceful means,” he added.
