
It was an uneasy déjà vu when Dania Hanatsheh was bussed out of an Israeli jail this week and handed out in Ramallah among a sea of joyful Palestinians. During the first part of the ceasefire agreement, Israel freed 90 women and teenagers, including Hanatsheh, who stated, “Palestinian families are ready to be arrested at any moment.” “You feel powerless because you can’t defend yourself in any way.
As part of an agreement to liberate 33 hostages from Gaza, increase fuel and aid supply to the region, and pause violence for six weeks, over 2,000 Palestinian inmates are to be released. Many of the inmates who will be released were imprisoned for offences like throwing stones or Molotov cocktails, while others have been found guilty of murdering Israelis.

Only a few weeks into the conflict that was brought on by Hamas’ devastating strike on Israel, Hanatsheh was initially taken into custody in November 2023. Days later, she was liberated as part of a week-long ceasefire that saw the release of hundreds of Palestinians in return for about half of the approximately 250 hostages that Hamas and other groups had dragged into Gaza.
