Near Los Angeles, three quickly spreading fires erupted out of control Wednesday, destroying hundreds of buildings, charring hillsides, and prompting authorities to order more than 70,000 residents to leave their homes. The mayhem claimed the lives of at least two people. Strong winds that hindered firefighting efforts fanned the fires, which have spread unchecked since they began on Tuesday.
The greatest fire has consumed about 5,000 acres in the quaint Pacific Palisades neighborhood, which lies west of Los Angeles between the coastal cities of Santa Monica and Malibu and is home to many movie, TV, and music stars. More than 1,000 buildings were burned, according to Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, who made this announcement at a news conference on Wednesday.
More than 500 acres have been burned by the Hurst fire in Sylmar, which is located in the San Fernando Valley northwest of Los Angeles. According to officials, none of the three flames had been extinguished.
Residents who disregarded evacuation instructions had suffered a “high number” of serious injuries, according to Marrone. The severe winds were expected to continue all day, officials cautioned. According to Los Angeles City Fire Chief Kristen Crowley, “with the strong winds that continue to push through the city and the county today, we are absolutely not out of danger yet.
