After months of disagreement over how the nation should distribute spectrum to them, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio unexpectedly agreed to introduce Starlink satellite internet services to India.
The biggest telecom provider in India will carry Starlink equipment in its retail locations, providing Starlink with a direct distribution channel in thousands of these establishments nationwide. After a fierce battle between Musk and Ambani over the distribution of airwaves for satellite internet, New Delhi ultimately supported the strategy the US entrepreneur had pushed for.
The distribution agreement will eventually see the Indian billionaire offer his rival’s products in the rapidly expanding market while also competing with them, allaying Ambani’s Reliance’s fears that Musk would take over the telecom industry once he launches his own.
According to Neil Shah, co-founder of the research firm Counterpoint, “Starlink’s entry into the Indian market has been unexpected, but it’s a wise move and a win-win for all the parties involved, who were previously fighting for the pie and are now working together and sharing.
The announcement of a similar cooperation between Starlink and Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom provider in India, was made the day before the Reliance merger. Getting government approval to start operations in the country is a prerequisite for both the Jio and Airtel agreements.
