The White House said on Sunday that more than 50 nations have requested negotiations with President Donald Trump to reduce harsh tariffs on exports to the United States, as trade partners braced for consequences.

The Republican has stayed stubborn since unleashing a bombardment of taxes on surprised countries worldwide Wednesday, saying that his principles “will never change” even as markets plunged. However, his staggered deadlines have allowed some countries to negotiate, despite his insistence that he would not back down and his administration’s warning against retaliation.

“More than 50 countries are reaching out to the president to start a negotiation,” Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, said CNN on Sunday, citing the US Trade Representative.

He stated that they were doing so “because they understand that they bear a lot of the tariffs,” despite the administration’s insistence that the penalties will not result in significant price increases in the United States.

He said, ” I don’t think you’ll see a big impact on the consumer in the United States.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC’s Meet the Press that 50 countries have sought out. But as for how much Trump will deal with them, “I think that’s an issue for President Trump,” Bessent stated.
