After Hamas sent over its lists of hostages and Palestinian detainees to be released in an exchange, negotiations to end the war in Gaza accelerated on Wednesday with the anticipated arrival of key figures from Israel, the United States, and regional nations.
Delegations were stepping up their attendance at the negotiations, which were held Monday in a Red Sea beach resort in Egypt, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan now seems closer than any before attempt to halt the war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his close friend, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, while Trump sent his son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Along with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, the prime minister of longtime mediator Qatar, they were anticipated to attend the negotiations on Wednesday.
In the meantime, it was anticipated that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio would participate in simultaneous discussions with European and Arab ministers in Paris to talk about how to carry out Trump’s proposal.
Although there is widespread international support for the plan, important aspects such as the timeline, a post-war government for the Gaza Strip, Hamas’s destiny, and the likelihood of an independent Palestinian state have not yet been clarified.
