Early on Sunday, a protester carrying a Palestinian flag and going barefoot ascended the Big Ben tower at the Palace of Westminster in central London, leading to his arrest. As shocked bystanders gathered near the Houses of Parliament early on Saturday, the barefoot man started climbing the tower’s stone facade.

Around a lengthy discussion with mediators, the man, who seemed to be holding a demonstration on a ledge a few meters (yards) above Elizabeth Tower, the building where Big Ben is located, left the building around midnight and went on a cherry picker. He boarded an ambulance that was waiting.

He may have been hurt while ascending barefoot, as evidenced by a noticeable bloodstain on the tower’s stonework. At different times, a tiny contingent of fans clapped from behind police barriers as he draped a Palestinian keffiyeh over the building and screamed, “Free Palestine.”

As rescue personnel attempted to reach the man, traffic outside London’s Palace of Westminster was mostly stopped on Saturday. Before they could talk him down, negotiators were repeatedly raised on a fire department ladder platform.

Several emergency services vehicles were present as spectators watched, and Westminster Bridge and an adjacent street were closed for the majority of the day. Additionally, police barred all pedestrian access to Parliament Square.
