On Tuesday, August 26, Australia withdrew Iran’s ambassador, claiming the nation was responsible for antisemitic arson attacks in Sydney and Melbourne.
Since World War II, Australia has not expelled an ambassador until now.

According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, intelligence services came to the “deeply disturbing conclusion” that Iran was responsible for at least two antisemitic acts. The prime minister claimed at a press conference that Tehran was responsible for the October 2024 fire attack on the Lewis Continental Cafe, a Jewish eatery in Sydney’s Bondi neighborhood.

Citing the intelligence findings, the prime minister added that it also ordered an arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne in December 2024. The two attacks did not result in any documented physical injuries.
A foreign nation orchestrated these extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression on Australian soil,” Albanese stated.

They were attempts to foment strife in our community and weaken social cohesion. It is completely inappropriate. Ahmad Sadeghi, the Iranian ambassador, was deemed “persona non grata” by Australia, which also mandated that he and three other officials depart the country within seven days.
