According to Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday, a man who killed four people before killing himself in a New York tower may have been targeting the NFL headquarters there because he accused the organization of causing brain damage that he said he had.

The first potential explanation for the late Monday gunshots that paralyzed midtown Manhattan was provided by the discovery that the murderer, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, had a letter mentioning the degenerative brain condition chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

He felt he had CTE, a known brain injury for those who participated in contact sports,” the suicide note stated. Adams told CBS News, “It seemed like he blamed the NFL for his injury.” Tamura has never really played for the top professional league, according to Adams. But according to reports, he excelled as a high school athlete in California.

According to The New York Times, the suicide letter requested that his brain be preserved for testing for CTE damage.

Not far from where a guy with a gripe against UnitedHealthcare shot down the CEO of the medical insurance business in broad daylight last December, the carnage prompted a large police reaction in the crowded city center.
