
To the cheers of a dozen of the groom’s fellow soldiers, Anna and Pavlo Chornobai exchanged rings at a wedding hall in the Ukrainian city of Sloviansk, close to the front line. The 22-year-old, who has a cherub tattoo on her collarbone, stated, “It’s a little different, but I don’t regret it at all. When I was a girl, there were horses and a puffy dress in my plans.” Many Ukrainian military spouses now feel a feeling of urgency as a result of the war. Many people don’t think it’s worth waiting for a tranquilly that only appears to be an illusion.
Western capitals have been engulfed in discussions over ceasefires and ending the three-year conflict, with US President Donald Trump advocating for an early conclusion. However, Sloviansk, which is just 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the battle lines, feels quite different from reality.
