After seasons of record drought that caused rivers to drop to all-time lows, sparked historic forest fires, and resulted in hundreds of deaths, most of Europe is preparing for yet another intense heatwave. With predictions of temperatures in the mid-30s C, large portions of Britain and France were already under excessive heat warnings on Monday. Meanwhile, new fires broke out in Greece and Spain due to dry weather. In the upcoming days, very high temperatures were also predicted in other nations that are not used to the heat, including Switzerland, Austria, and Hungary.
According to statistics provided by Europe’s Copernicus climate observatory on Monday, the heatwave follows the widest-ranging droughts on record for the month of July in mainland France and Switzerland. On Monday, MeteoAlarm, Europe’s weather warning system, reported that a large portion of Italy and Croatia’s coastline regions are already experiencing extremely high temperatures. During a heatwave in downtown Madrid, Spain, tourists use umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun while taking selfies. Here are some things to consider as temperatures surge once more throughout the continent, which is increasing at the fastest rate on Earth as a result of human-caused climate change.
