Six US agencies were ordered by a federal judge in California on Thursday to restore thousands of newly hired workers who were let go during President Donald Trump’s purging of the federal workforce. The US Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, Department of Interior, and Treasury Department are all affected by the decision rendered by US District Judge William Alsup during a hearing in San Francisco.
Last month, Alsup temporarily prohibited the US Office of Personnel Management, which oversees federal agencies’ human resources department, from directing agencies to terminate probationary employees. However, at the time, he declined to mandate that fired individuals be given their jobs back.
Although some probationary employees have been with the federal government for a long time, most have been in their current positions for less than a year. Compared to other government employees, they have less job protections, but they can often only be fired for poor performance.
While there is evidence that OPM unlawfully directed the termination of employees at the six agencies, Alsup stated on Thursday that OPM does not have the authority to command firings.
