The conference will bring together professionals in the fields of art, culture, policy, media, and technology from over 90 nations under the subject “A Living Culture.”
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, September 18, 2022 — The fifth edition of Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, a renowned international forum, will return to Manarat Al Saadiyat with the theme “A Living Culture,” the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced. The live event, which will take place in the UAE capital from October 23 to 25, 2022, is intended to examine the future of the cultural industry and propose innovative artistic responses to some of the most pressing problems confronting the globe today.
The Theme Of The Culture Summit
A Living Culture, the theme for this year, will look at the modern concerns influencing development in the culture and creative industries (CCI) and the broader cultural sector today. To better comprehend the widespread impact that culture has had on our individual and collective lives, the programme will investigate what it means to embrace the culture as a lived experience in a world that has been revolutionised by COVID-19. To address these pressing contemporary concerns, the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi will draw on the knowledge of the participants, who will include cultural leaders, artists, practitioners, scholars, educators, and creative professionals.
Detailed Groundwork Of The Summit
The programme is carefully crafted so that each day delves further into a different sub-theme. Living Cultural Ecosystems will examine the formation of more dynamic or living cultural and creative ecosystems that are more adaptable, robust, and responsive to change on the first day from a sectoral viewpoint.
This theme examines problems and difficulties faced by the cultural sector in creating and distributing culture in the wake of the pandemic, particularly about new, more vibrant, or active creative or cultural ecologies.
First Day
Three former heads of state will be especially welcomed to the summit on that day: Joyce Banda, President of Malawi (2012-2014); Ivo Josipovi, President of Croatia (2010-2015); and Dalia Grybauskait, President of Lithuania (2009-2019). The summit will be moderated by HE
Zaki Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE, will focus on the contribution of culture to the creation of resilient and inclusive societies.
With a remarkable keynote discussion featuring HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, and renowned comedian and television host Trevor Noah, all creative professions will be examined through this lens.
A multi-track programme includes performances by prominent individuals in the performing arts, talks on diversity in Hollywood’s creative industries, the power of culture districts, creative presentations by artists, film screenings, workshops, and policy seminars.

Second Day
On the second day of the workshop, Living in Culture will examine how culture affects people and communities through the prism of evolving cultural involvement patterns. To survive, the pandemic spurred the industry to innovate, which is what this theme examines. Access to these digital cultural items and services became a social and psychological lifeline as well as an integral component of people’s everyday lives, especially during times of lockdown.
AI and Technology
Participants in the Summit will be especially encouraged to explore the role of AI on the future of culture during this second day, which will begin with a keynote address from the UAE Minister of Culture and Youth, HE Noura Al Kaabi, through panel discussions, case studies from cutting-edge tech companies like TeamLab, and an exceptional creative conversation between Tim Marlow, Director of the Design Museum, and Ai-Da, the world’s first ultra-realistic artist robot.
The relationship between “Technology, Creativity, and the Changing Face of Pop Culture” will also be discussed by Panos A. Panay, President of the Recording Academy, in a conversation with Jimmy Jam. This will be followed by a keynote address from renowned architect and Director of Forensic Architecture Eyal Weizman.
A panel discussion about Afghanistan’s dynamic cultural landscape will be followed by a performance by female whirling dervish dancer Fahima Mirzaie. The second day’s programme will be concluded by a panel discussion with artist Emeka Ogboh and architect Jing Liu, led by the Guggenheim Museum.
Culture And Diversity
Finally, Culture, Diversity, and Power will concentrate on the crucial issues surrounding the defense and advancement of cultural diversity and the diversity of cultural expression, as well as how policies might sustainably promote this diversity’s expression. This issue focuses on significant obstacles to maintaining diversity in policies and enablement structures, as well as the protection and promotion of cultural expression variety.
While this subject of inclusion and diversity will permeate the whole Summit, two important panel discussions on “Creating a Richer Chorus” and “The New Canon” will be organized on this final day. The session on “Integrating Cultural Diversity via Music,” led by Berklee Abu Dhabi, will also discuss diversity. Architects Sumayya Vally, Sir David Adjaye OBE, and Berklee President Erica Muhl were among the keynote speakers and creative discussions that day’s highlights.
Al Dhalla, a traditional UAE marine chant, will play to kick off the day, while the Global Jazz Endeavor, a multicultural music project by Grammy Award-winning artist Danilo Perez alongside musician Charbel Rouhana, will perform to round it out.
The influence of digital media and artificial intelligence, some regional focus, including East Africa, the arts and culture, culture, and climate emergency, among other things, will also be considered during the Summit.
High-level speakers will also be featured in this year’s programme, including award-winning architect Frank Gehry, Guy, and Myriam Ullens, Fiammetta Rocco, the Economist’s culture editor, Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, Dr Helena Nassif, director of Culture Resource (Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy), among many others.
A fantastic lineup of keynote addresses, panel discussions, artist presentations, workshops, film screenings, creative exchanges, and cultural performances are included in the Summit programme. A hip-hop dance performance by choreographer Kader Attou and a musical performance by famous Oud player and composer Naseer Shamma are just two of the heritage performances that will be woven throughout the plenaries.
