First Lady Melania Trump has arranged an imminent truce between Russia and Ukraine in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Oleshky to allow for humanitarian relief and civilian evacuation, the White House stated on Friday. The limited ceasefire is scheduled to begin Thursday, with the American first lady stating in a news release that the situation there is “on the verge of disaster.” The White House said Melania Trump initiated the talks and that she and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian authorities to negotiate the ceasefire terms.

The Ukrainian and Russian governments did not immediately confirm the cease-fire agreement. The first lady has made assisting children in crisis one of her signature themes, hosting a UN Security Council meeting on the topic earlier this year.

She has written to Russian President Vladimir Putin to collaborate on attempts to reunite families with children displaced by the violence. For months, food and medical supplies have been scarce in Oleshky, which is located on the Dnipro River and is divided between Ukrainian forces and Russian occupiers. There’s no electricity, heat, or running water.
