Authorities continued to locate survivors and move them to safety as rescue operations in areas devastated by devastating flash floods along the Nepal-China border began their fourth day on Saturday. As some people arrive at relief shelters, families anxiously await word of their loved ones as the death toll and the number of unaccounted-for individuals keep rising.
The overall toll in Nepal and Tibet increased to 633 killed and nearly 3,000 missing after Nepali police revised their numbers on Saturday. Seven people have died and over 550 are missing, according to Chinese police. After bad weather briefly hindered aerial rescue operations, helicopters in Nuwakot, one of Nepal’s flood-ravaged districts, began operations before midday on Saturday.
A few helicopters were filled with boxes and bags of supplies, such as rice, instant noodles, shirts, and snacks. Others brought survivors back from the flood-affected districts. While a soldier carried an elderly woman on his back to a medical tent, an elderly guy was carefully assisted from one helicopter. There, medical professionals examined her teeth and gums, blood pressure, breathing, and heartbeat. A dozen or more people came out of another chopper. A number of infants who had also been evacuated were carried by soldiers.
