Thursday, Iranian media said that Tehran had received a letter from US Vise President JD Vance but had not yet replied. This comes as efforts are made to start peace talks between the two countries again. According to Tasnim news agency, “Iran has received the letter but has not yet responded.” Fars news agency also said the same thing, citing “a source familiar with the matter.”
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Vance sent the letter to Mohsen Rezaei, the head of Iran’s security, at the request of US President Donald Trump. The goal was to start talks again and avoid new US attacks.
The letter and following talks between US and Iranian officials were more about a possible framework for talks than specific terms for a peace deal, according to the newspaper. Iran was attacked by the US and Israel on February 28, killing its former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military leaders. This was the start of the war. In response, Iran attacked Israel and US assets in the area. It also restricted ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which usually carries about 15% of the world’s oil.
