The drummer for the Texas boogie-rock combo ZZ Top, Frank Beard, passed away. He maintained the beat for the group’s biggest singles, including “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin.” He was seventy-seven. According to publicist Bob Merlis, Beard passed away on Tuesday at his Richmond, Texas, ranch while receiving hospice care, surrounded by family members. Billy Gibbons, guitarist and co-founder of the band, praised Beard in a statement while touring with bassist Elwood Francis. The world lost one of the most inventive drummers and a wonderful and genuine son of Texas today, while Elwood and I lost a wonderful friend and collaborator. His distinctive backbeat was essential to ZZ’s success. The band he was a member of for sixty years will continue as he had desired, Gibbons stated.

Six of ZZ Top’s singles peaked at number one on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, and the album sold over 50 million copies. They received three Grammy Award nominations and seven of their albums were listed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200.In the 2019 documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” Beard declares, “I’ve found the people I was meant to play with.” “I never wanted to be fired, and I never wanted to quit.” Beard’s influence was honoured by drummers on social media, including Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine, who wrote that he was astounded to witness Beard’s two-hand shuffle live in high school. Beard is “a very special and unique man behind the kit,” according to former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum.
