Floods and landslides followed by days of severe monsoon rains have killed at least 44 people in southeastern Bangladesh, and left more than a million stranded as authorities hurried Saturday to provide help to ravaged towns.

Flooding in seven districts has disturbed daily life and cut off thousands of people, leaving 267,918 homes stranded, the disaster management ministry said Saturday. The districts are Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj.

Power cuts, damaged roads and broken communication links have hampered rescue and relief efforts. Homes have been submerged by flood waters, leaving many inhabitants unable to cook for days, while others are struggling as thick layers of mud blanketed kitchens and living rooms. We still have water in the house and no way of cooking. “Now we have finished the dry food that we had and we have to spend nights in the dark with our children as there is no electricity,” said Nurul Islam, a resident of a flood-hit region in Chattogram.

Thousands of families depend on dry food – flattened rice, puffed rice or biscuits that do not require cooking – and humanitarian aid. But washed out roads and destroyed bridges have made it impossible for assistance personnel to reach some of the severely devastated areas.
