After hosting the NATO meeting in Ankara this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave international leaders personalized revolvers loaded with live bullets. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian leader Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa were among the heads of state and other state officials present who received the unique gift. Each recipient’s name was inscribed on the firearms, which came with bullets and a cleaning kit. According to the BBC, Starmer’s gun is currently with Turkish officials and is anticipated to be deactivated before being returned to the UK. Rob Jetten, the prime minister of the Netherlands, declared that he would follow suit.
During a news conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan handed Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda a pistol with live ammunition and the president’s name engraved. AFP
When a firearm is decommissioned, it can no longer fire live ammo. A certificate waiving export control was also included with the gift, enabling the lawmakers to travel abroad. It is probably going to reflect both the nation’s armaments sector and the talks at the summit about strengthening the alliance’s defenses. Costa’s security team took the firearm for inspection, according to a European Council official. According to Politico, they stated, “We will follow the Belgian procedures to bring it to Belgium and then we will store it in line with the security requirements imposed by the General Secretariat of the Council.”
