Since the beginning of the year, Dubai Police have registered 4,504 infractions for overtaking on the hard shoulder, demonstrating that this is one of the riskiest traffic behaviors that endangers other drivers and prevents emergency vehicles from performing their humanitarian duty. Overtaking on the hard shoulder is dangerous behavior that can result in major accidents, particularly during traffic or on highways, according to Brigadier Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police. He clarified that such behaviors demonstrate a driver’s disrespect for the law as well as their negligence about other people’s lives.
The hard shoulder is not intended for maneuvering or overtaking, Brig. Bin Suwaidan said. He continued, “It is strictly reserved for emergencies, allowing broken-down vehicles to stop safely and ensuring the smooth passage of police, ambulance, and civil defense vehicles to accident scenes and reports as quickly as required.” He clarified that overtaking on the hard shoulder directly endangers other drivers, especially when automobiles are halted because of technical issues or when people are waiting for assistance next to their vehicles. He went on, “Drivers do not expect vehicles to be travelling in that lane, which can lead to run-over accidents or sudden collisions.”
Brig. Bin Suwaidan added that this behavior impairs the safety of people and property by interfering with traffic flow, decreasing the effectiveness of emergency response, and perhaps delaying the arrival of rescue and ambulance teams to the injured. He pointed out that the community is quite cooperative when it comes to reporting such behaviors via the “We Are All Police” service on 901 or the Dubai Police app. This helps to improve legal compliance and lessen improper behavior on the roadways.
