Nearly 260,000 people have been forced to evacuate due to uncontrolled wildfires that are blazing on Saturday in the southwest of France and close to Madrid, the capital of Spain. This has caused Paris to send out its military. According to France’s interior minister, the evacuation of 197,000 people from Bordeaux and surrounding areas, including popular tourist destinations, was “probably” the largest peacetime evacuation the nation has ever witnessed.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that “saving lives” was the top priority while visiting the fire zone in Spain, where 60,000 people had been evacuated from villages west of Madrid. A higher number of about 70,000 individuals evacuated had previously been provided by Madrid officials.
Mar Nicolas, the mayor of Brunete, a town in Spain west of Madrid, expressed her concern. There are fires every year, but this one has been very bad, she said. “It’s a disaster. Before firefighters put out a different blaze close to the city of Valencia in eastern Spain, one person was murdered. Although authorities in both Spain and France claimed that the intensity of some of the fires had decreased, overworked firemen fighting nonstop for days have been unable to contain the conflagrations.
