On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio initiated a visit to India that will encompass discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The purpose of the visit is to reestablish relations with a partner who is typically simpatico, following Washington’s cordial summit with China a week ago. Rubio, a devout Catholic, initiated his four-day, four-city visit by traveling to the headquarters of Mother Teresa’s charity in the eastern city of Kolkata and praying over her tomb.

Rubio, who was visiting India for the first time in his life, smiled in front of an assembly of nuns who were all dressed in the late humanitarian’s trademark white and blue saris. He was wearing a yellow garland over his suit.

Sister Marie Juan of the Missionaries of Charity informed reporters following Rubio’s hour-and-a-half-long visit that he discussed providing assistance to the homeless, terminally unwell, and those affected by leprosy. She stated, “He was delighted to pray, and we were equally delighted to have him.”
Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India and a Catholic, subsequently stated that the visit demonstrated that the two nations’ relationship was founded on “shared values, in addition to strong policies.”

Rubio, who was accompanied by his wife Jeanette, subsequently traveled to New Delhi, where he was scheduled to meet with Modi later on Saturday.
