In light of the precarious diplomatic ties between Washington and Tehran, Pakistan announced on Monday that it has assisted the evacuation of 22 Iranian crew members from a US-seized ship. The move was described as a “confidence-building measure.”
According to a statement from Pakistan’s foreign ministry, the sailors, who had been detained on the container ship Touska, were flown into Islamabad late on Sunday and were scheduled to be turned over to Iranian authorities.
The transfer comes after US forces intercepted the Iranian-flagged ship during a tense naval confrontation in the Gulf of Oman. Beijing denied President Donald Trump’s claim that the ship included “a gift from China” and insisted it was against “any malicious association and speculation”.
Iran has called for UN intervention, denouncing the seizure as “piracy” and a breach of a truce in April. In an effort to ease tensions between the US and Iran, Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator in the Middle East conflict.
Despite broader tensions over sanctions, maritime routes, and regional security, Pakistan said that the crew transfer was organized with both parties, marking a rare example of practical collaboration. After repairs, the vessel itself is anticipated to be returned.
