On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that he would continue the US naval blockade of Iran’s ports while extending a ceasefire with the country to allow for more time for talks. Trump declared on social media that he would “extend the Ceasefire” until Iran made a proposal to put an end to hostilities. But he “directed our Military to continue the Blockade.” Hours before the ceasefire was thought to be about to expire, Trump extended it. Additionally, the White House announced that Vice President JD Vance would not be traveling to Pakistan for the anticipated second round of peace negotiations.

The US president claimed that Iranian internal strife was the cause of the collapse in further negotiations and added that Pakistan’s authorities had requested an extension of the truce.Trump wrote on his Truth Social website, “We have been asked to postpone our attack on the country of Iran until their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal, based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so, and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan.” However, Trump stated that the US military will “in all other respects, remain ready and able” and that the blockade of ports on Iran’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz will continue. He declared that the cease-fire would last “until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”
