As Iran’s Guards claimed to have cut off one of the most important energy shipping lanes in the world, Israel launched new strikes on Iran and Lebanon, where state television said a residential building was struck on Wednesday.
On the fifth day of a conflict that sent equities plummeting, Iran increased its retaliatory missile and drone onslaught while governments rushed to evacuate nationals trapped in the Middle East. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed “complete control” of the Strait of Hormuz, the vital chokepoint into the Gulf, which has already caused global petroleum prices to surge due to the escalating conflict.
However, Trump said that the US Navy was prepared to escort tankers through the channel that one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil passes through, and that the US had “knocked out” Iran’s navy, air force, and radar systems. Following its initial deadly strikes on Iran with Israel on Saturday that murdered Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the US military reported hitting about 2,000 sites. After midnight, Israel’s military announced a “broad wave of strikes” throughout Iran, which had fired three waves of missile barrages into Israel in the previous hours.
