Government officials said Wednesday that heavy snow in northern Japan over the past two weeks has caused 35 deaths across the country so far, including people who had sudden heart attacks or fell while shovelling snow. As of Wednesday, 15 prefectures had been affected, and in the worst-hit places, the snow was thought to have reached 2 meters (6.5 feet) deep.

Niigata Prefecture, a rice-growing area in northern Japan, had the most deaths connected to snow, with 12 people dying. One of them was a guy in his 50s who was found fallen on the roof of his home in Uonuma city on January 21.

A guy in his 70s was found prostrate in front of his home in Nagaoka city and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Niigata government said he probably fell off the roof while raking snow.

The main spokeswoman for the Japanese government said that even if the weather was growing warmer, there could be more danger ahead since the snow would start to melt, causing landslides and dangerous areas. Please be very careful about your safety, and wear a helmet or use a lifeline rope, especially when you’re working on clearing snow,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told reporters.
