Israel’s Ramon Airport, near the southern city of Eilat, briefly shut down on Sunday after being struck by a drone launched from Yemen, Israel’s Airports Authority confirmed. The drone hit the arrivals hall, injuring two people with shrapnel, according to the national ambulance service.
Flights were halted for about two hours as the military investigated the incident. After full safety checks and Air Force approval, the airport reopened for both departures and arrivals. The first flight to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv was scheduled to depart shortly after operations resumed.
Located near the Red Sea resort city of Eilat, Ramon Airport mainly handles domestic flights. Israeli airlines Israir and Arkia both confirmed their passengers and crews were safe, with no damage reported to aircraft. Israeli carriers Israir and Arkia had flights scheduled from the airport on Sunday.
The Houthis in Yemen have claimed previous drone and missile attacks against Israel in support of Palestinians. Israel has responded with airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including Hodeidah port. Sunday’s strike marks the most direct hit since Israel killed senior Houthi leaders in August.
