According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is prepared for peace negotiations but will not remove its soldiers from more land first as Moscow has requested. In remarks to reporters that were made public on Tuesday, he expressed his satisfaction that negotiations might take place anywhere, excluding Russia and Belarus, Moscow’s close ally.
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin were scheduled to meet in Budapest this month, but plans were shelved after Moscow refused to budge on demands, including that Ukraine give up additional land in exchange for a truce. Zelensky told reporters on Tuesday that he and the visiting Dutch foreign minister, David van Weel, will meet on Friday or Saturday to discuss the specifics of a ceasefire agreement.
It isn’t a strategy to stop the conflict. First and foremost, a ceasefire is required, Zelensky stated. This strategy aims to start a dialogue. We decided to meet on Friday or Saturday, and our advisers will do so in the next days. They will discuss the specifics of this plan.
Zelensky told reporters on Monday that he was pleased to participate in peace negotiations, even in Hungary, despite his misgivings about some of the stances taken by its prime minister, Viktor Orban, who he said “blocks everything for Ukraine.
