According to a source, US trade negotiators have canceled their August 25–29 travel to New Delhi, postponing discussions on a possible trade deal and ending expectations of reprieve from further US tariffs on Indian imports starting on August 27.

According to the person with direct knowledge of the situation, the current round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement is now probably going to be postponed until a later date.

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) is in charge of the trade and tariff negotiations, and the US embassy in New Delhi stated that it does not have any further information on them. A Reuters email asking for comments was not immediately answered by India’s trade minister.

Tensions between the two countries were drastically heightened earlier this month when US President Donald Trump put an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports, blaming New Delhi’s ongoing imports of Russian oil.

Beginning on August 27, the new import tax will increase tariffs on select Indian goods to as much as 50%, making them among of the highest imposed on any trading partner of the United States.
