According to those impacted, millions of government employees in China received unexpected pay raises this week as Beijing attempts to increase expenditure to help the faltering economy.

The initial payoff, if all 48 million persons counted as public-sector workers collected on the terms outlined to Reuters, would make up a one-time economic boost of between $12 billion and $20 billion.

In an attempt to fight corruption and boost consumer purchasing power, the Chinese government increased local officials’ salaries by over 30% in 2015. This was the last time the country openly announced a nationwide rise in civil servant pay.

A request for comment was not immediately answered by the State Council Information Office, which represents the Chinese government.

According to those reached by Reuters or who shared on social media, government workers’ monthly salaries were raised by an average of roughly 500 yuan ($68.50) this time. A few lower-level government employees claimed monthly raises of around 300 yuan ($41).

According to persons who know the situation, the pay raise for public sector employees and officials was frequently given in one lump sum bonus payment backdated to July.
