Following last June’s presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, I called my connections in France, Germany, and Ukraine to get their opinions. Together with the NATO alliance, they believed Biden was doomed. Since 1945, the US president has led the Free World and helped bring about the collapse of the Soviet Union. Trump, however, rejects international agreements in his “America First” policy, and his rhetoric highlights this position. He risks our collective security by calling NATO “obsolete” and favouring isolationism.
Trump has snuck Ukraine and NATO under the rug. With French President Emmanuel Macron positioned as the leader of the Free World, Europe is now at the forefront. Macron supports multilateralism, working to counter threats to the liberal order and bolster the European Union’s influence globally. Igor Novikov, a former adviser to Zelensky, stated, “I do think Macron is one of the few remaining leaders of the Free World. He continues to look long-term and globally in this age of infantilism and isolation.
Trump promotes far-right nationalist organizations in Europe and swoons over leaders like Kim Jong Un of North Korea and Vladimir Putin of Russia. Not to mention his choice to leave Syria and desert the Kurds, a longstanding ally of the United States.
