The newly renovated and enlarged Emergency and Trauma Unit at the Saint George Hospital University Medical Centre (SGHUMC) in Beirut has been officially opened by The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), a global humanitarian organisation whose headquarters are in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
With the help of TBHF’s “Salam Beirut” campaign, which contributed $2.36 million (Dhs 8.7 million), the project has restored facilities in Lebanon’s oldest and most prestigious medical institution, which was badly destroyed in the devastating 2020 Beirut Port explosion. The inauguration highlights the strength of global unity in disaster response and represents a significant step towards restoring access to essential healthcare.
For the first time since the explosion, SGHUMC can function at full capacity thanks to the rebuilt unit’s modern medical equipment, increased capacity, improved trauma care facilities, and new paediatric division. The facility, which is anticipated to handle more than 40,000 patients a year, represents a major advancement in Beirut’s medical capacity.
Over 150 people were killed, hundreds were injured, and nearly 300,000 were displaced by the explosion at the Port of Beirut. SGHUMC, a 147-year-old cornerstone of Lebanon’s healthcare system, was one of the most severely damaged institutions, suffering significant operational and structural damage.
