On Sunday, May 18, the Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) offered free admission to all of its museums in honour of International Museum Day.

From May 15 to 22, the Authority will commemorate the event with several interactive events that will showcase how museums are changing to serve communities better and adapt to social and cultural changes.

This year’s International Museum Day theme is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Societies,” which emphasises how crucial it is to prepare museums to handle continuous societal and digital changes and future generations’ expectations.

It also emphasises the crucial role of protecting intangible cultural heritage, empowering young people in local communities, and employing cutting-edge technology to strengthen museums’ position in a changing world.

The topic is also in line with the beliefs of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah and a member of the Supreme Council, who sees museums as essential hubs for identity, knowledge, and cultural awareness for all facets of society. Aisha Rashid Deemas, Director General of Sharjah Museums Authority, emphasised the importance of this worldwide event by saying: “This occasion reaffirms our commitment to delivering high-quality museum experiences that promote lifelong learning and strengthen the connection between museums and their communities.
