According to Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office, 2024 was the EU’s most successful tourism year ever, with almost 3 billion nights spent at tourist lodging facilities. After a final surge in the final quarter of 2023, this is a 2.2% increase compared with 2023 (+65.4 million nights), according to Eurostat.

The number of nights spent by foreign visitors increased significantly by 67.2 million (+4.9%) in 2024, but the number of nights spent by local visitors declined a little (-0.1%) by -1.8 million. The countries with the most nights spent at tourist lodgings were Spain (500 million), Italy (458 million), France (451 million), and Germany (441 million), accounting for 61.6% of all nights spent in the EU. The countries with the fewest nights were Estonia (6.6 million), Latvia (4.7 million), and Luxembourg (3.4 million).

The countries with the largest increases in tourism nights in 2024 were Malta (14.4%) and Latvia (7.4%). However, only in Luxembourg (-2.7%), France (-0.6%), Belgium (-0.2%), and Sweden (-0.1%) did they decline.

The increasing annual results were caused by the final quarter of 2024, when the number of nights spent in the EU increased by 5.1% above Q4 2023. Except Ireland, where it fell marginally (-1.8%), all EU nations had an increase in tourism nights in Q4 2024 when compared to the same quarter in 2023. Malta (+16.5 percent), Latvia (+12.5 percent), Italy (+11.1 percent), and Croatia (+10.2 percent) saw the largest quarterly growth among the other EU nations.
