Malaysia intensified efforts for the long-awaited execution of a five-point peace plan on Sunday, calling for the prolongation and expansion of a ceasefire in Myanmar following the earthquake. Following a massive earthquake in late March that killed about 3,800 people and left tens of thousands homeless, the ruling military junta first announced a truce in the multifaceted civil war.

Although conflict monitors report fighting and junta airstrikes have persisted throughout, the previously extended accord is set to expire at the end of May. According to a statement, Malaysia’s Mohamad Hasan “proposed the extension and expansion of ceasefires beyond the currently affected zones” during a Sunday meeting of regional foreign ministers.

In his opening remarks, Mohamad urged all parties involved in Myanmar to put a stop to the fighting, prolong and broaden the ceasefire, relieve the suffering of the country’s citizens, and smooth the protracted and challenging road to recovery.

Despite the truce, the junta has reportedly maintained its aircraft bombardment campaign, according to the UN and independent war monitors. Several ethnic armed groups and anti-coup organisations have also promised to halt fighting. But when anti-coup troops surrounded junta-held areas in eastern Myanmar, several locals said they had been forced to relocate.
