Guido Crosetto, the minister of defense, announced Thursday that Italy had dispatched a second military vessel to assist the international relief flotilla that was targeted by drones while attempting to bring aid to Gaza.
About fifty civilian boats are being used by the Global Sumud Flotilla in an attempt to lift Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza. Numerous attorneys and activists are on board, including Greta Thunberg, a Swedish climate activist. In a statement to the lower chamber of parliament, Crosetto stated, “We have sent one ship and another is on its way, ready for any eventuality.”
In international waters 30 nautical miles (56 km) off the Greek island of Gavdos, Italy sent its first frigate on Wednesday, just hours after the GSF claimed it was targeted by drones that dumped itching powder and stun grenades.
The flotilla was repeatedly invited to dump humanitarian goods in an Israeli port, leaving it to Israeli authorities to transport to Gaza or face penalties, but the Israeli foreign ministry did not directly address the accusation. To defend the flotilla, Spain has also chosen to deploy a military warship.
Crosetto advised the campaigners to accept an Italian offer to turn up their humanitarian supplies and permit the local Catholic Church to distribute them in Gaza, but cautioned them against insisting on trying to lift the Israeli embargo.
