As talks seem to have reached a snag, Iran’s parliament speaker stated on Sunday that the easing of sanctions is not part of the most recent US proposal for a nuclear agreement, according to state media.

Since April, the two adversaries have engaged in five rounds of Omani-mediated negotiations in an attempt to replace a historic deal between Tehran and international powers that placed limitations on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. In 2018, US President Donald Trump renounced the deal during his first term.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, stated in a video broadcast on Iranian state television that “the US plan does not even mention the lifting of sanctions.” He accused the Americans of trying to force a “unilateral” deal that Tehran would not accept, calling it dishonest.

“If the delusional US president is truly seeking a deal, he ought to realise his mistake and alter his strategy,” Ghalibaf stated. Iranian authorities criticised “ambiguities” in the draft language after Iran claimed to have received “elements” of a US proposal on May 31, the day after the fifth session of negotiations.
