Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, whose country is playing a central role in mediating efforts to end the Gaza war, dismissed the idea of Palestinians leaving Gaza voluntarily as “nonsense.

Speaking at a joint press conference with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini on Saturday, Abdelatty said: “If there is a manmade famine in Gaza, it is designed to push residents from their land. It is nonsense to describe this as voluntary displacement.”

His comments came after Israel urged Gaza City residents to move south as its forces push deeper into the enclave’s largest urban center. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued that Palestinians should be allowed to leave voluntarily and suggested other countries accept them, framing it as a matter of human rights.

Abdelatty also revealed he held talks with US special envoy Steve Witkoff on Friday, focused on intensifying efforts to implement the latest ceasefire plan. He accused Israel of obstructing progress, delaying a truce agreement.

Hamas agreed in August to a 60-day ceasefire proposal that included releasing half the hostages in exchange for Israel freeing some Palestinian prisoners. An Egyptian official later confirmed the plan called for halting Israeli operations for two months and set a framework for a broader deal to end the nearly two-year conflict.
