Jimmy Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and 100-year-old former US president who led the country from 1977 to 1981 after rising from modest beginnings in rural Georgia, passed away on Sunday, according to a statement from his nonprofit foundation.
At his home in Plains, Georgia, the same small community where he was born and once operated a peanut farm before becoming governor of the Peach State and a presidential candidate, Carter received hospice care since mid-February 2023.
While “surrounded by his family, Carter passed away “peacefully” at his Plains home, according to a statement from the Carter Center.
Not just to me, but to everyone who values human rights, peace, and selfless love, my father was a hero, Chip Carter said in the statement.

Carter’s strong first two years as president included negotiating the Camp David Accords, a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, and he committed to social justice and human rights during his one term.
However, his government encountered several difficulties, chief among them the capture of American hostages in Iran and the 1980 failed attempt to free the 52 Americans who were held captive. His management of an oil crisis also drew criticism.
