Up to 1.6 million people in 1,657 villages in Sindh might be impacted by the floods, according to Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, according to Geo News. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Memon stated that the province administration had gathered its resources and was preparing to handle the possible emergency. Ministers are present, he said, and district officials are actively participating.
His warning coincides with the submersion of large portions of Punjab, where over 1.5 million people have been impacted and at least 30 people have died. Heavy rainfall has caused the Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi rivers to rise, leading to flooding. About 481,000 people have already been evacuated from the impacted districts, and authorities are moving inhabitants to safer areas, according to Geo News.
According to Memon, 192 rescue boats are ready for deployment in Sindh, and the government has set up 551 sites for relief camps. Water levels may affect over 273,000 people across 167 union councils if they continue to rise. He further mentioned that on September 2 and 3, the floodwaters might reach Sindh.
Memon provided the current barrage discharge status, stating that Kotri is releasing 251,000 cusecs of water, Sukkur is releasing 289,000 cusecs, and Guddu is releasing 351,000 cusecs. The relative capacity of the barrages are 600,000, 900,000, and 1.2 million cusecs. The situation is steady for now, and if there isn’t any significant rainfall, everything should stay under control, according to Geo News.
