According to the students and organisations that assist them, the administration of President Donald Trump is focussing more attention on the social media postings made by South Korean students who are studying in the US or intend to do so.
Parents of students who are studying or intend to study in the United States are concerned about it. After students from China and India, South Koreans make up the third-largest group of international students in the United States.
According to an internal cable obtained by Reuters on Tuesday, as the State Department was ready to increase social media screening of international students, the US government directed its overseas missions to cease setting up new interviews for applicants for student and exchange visitor visas. As part of its extensive attempts to fulfil its hardline immigration agenda, the Trump administration has attempted to increase deportations and cancel student visas.
Park Hyuntae, the director of Worldnet US Overseas Edu Centre, a Seoul-based organisation that helps South Korean students, stated, “My clients, parents are calling me constantly today to figure out what is going on.”
“As far as I know, there haven’t been any cancellations of existing interviews, but those who have already scheduled those interviews and those who plan to apply for interviews are both anxious and apprehensive,” Park said that customers should exercise caution when posting anything online and that the stoppage in visa interviews might postpone the start of the school year.
