Speaking up about the “cruel” treatment she received from the media as a young woman, Paris Hilton claims that even if the industry has changed, more has to be done to better how people are depicted. The 44-year-old socialite, who starred with Nicole Richie in the reality series The Simple Life in the 2000s, discussed the extreme scrutiny she endured.

She called the encounter “harassment” and explained its significant effects in an interview with the Press Association. “Back then the media was so cruel to myself and to a few other women and it just felt like assault,” she said. “It was fun for people back then and the comments that people would say to us would not be accepted today.” She acknowledged the progress, but noted.

Hilton has repeatedly addressed the term “dumb blonde” that was applied to her, disclosing that it was a deliberately crafted persona intended to serve as “armour” for self-defense. Hilton’s adolescent background has received a lot of attention since she revealed in her 2020 documentary This Is Paris that she was physically and psychologically abused while attending boarding institutions for problematic kids. Since then, she has become an outspoken campaigner in the United States, fighting against the “troubled teen industry”‘s treatment programs.
