In a case that has rekindled resentment in a city still scarred by the rape and murder of a doctor last year, Indian police announced Friday that they had detained three men on suspicion of gang raping a law student in Kolkata.

According to Indian media, the survivor said that she was beaten on Wednesday night inside a room on the college’s grounds. The three accused were two current and one past student. West Bengal state’s ruling party, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), declared that the “full weight of the law will be brought to bear.”

With an average of about 90 rapes per day recorded in 2022, the case once again brings attention to the pervasive problem of sexual assault in the most populous nation in the world. Additionally, it has led to new political disputes between the AITC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

State BJP leaders have been disseminating the images of key Trinamool Congress leaders and Monojit Mishra, one of the three accused in connection with the rape of a law student on college property, as far as they can on social media.

Mishra was photographed with several Trinamool Congress leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s general secretary, Chandrima Bhattacharya, the independent finance minister in West Bengal, and Kajari Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the sister-in-law of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
