In an effort to support Volodymyr Zelensky as the US president pressures Ukraine to embrace a speedy peace agreement to end Europe’s bloodiest war in eight decades, European leaders said Sunday that they would join Zelensky for a meeting with Donald Trump in Washington.

To strengthen Zelensky’s hand, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer conducted an allied conference on Sunday with the specific goal of securing strong security guarantees for Ukraine, including a US participation.

The Europeans are eager to assist Zelensky in preventing a recurrence of his February last visit at the Oval Office. That backfired, as Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly humiliated the Ukrainian leader by calling him rude and unappreciative.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who supports many of Trump’s policies, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, whose access to Trump included golf outings in Florida earlier this year, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will also visit Washington.
