Boosting Australia’s artificial intelligence capabilities, Amazon said in a blog post on Saturday that it will invest A$20 billion ($12.97 billion) between 2025 and 2029 to develop, run, and maintain its data centre infrastructure in Australia.

The cash is intended for expanded server capacity and support for generative AI workloads, making this Amazon’s largest worldwide technology commitment in Australia. Additionally, it announced that it is investing in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, with plans to purchase a total of over 170 megawatts of capacity across the three projects.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on social networking site X, “Amazon Web Services’ $20 billion investment in data centres in Australia will set us up for the future, boosting our economy and productivity.” He continued, “This is a huge vote of confidence in the Australian economy.”

Large IT firms worldwide are extending their infrastructure to meet the quickly increasing demand for cloud computing and generative AI. Businesses like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have been increasing their expenditures in data centres to gain market dominance and satisfy demand for AI workloads.

Amazon revealed plans on Monday to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania to develop data centre infrastructure, in addition to the billions of dollars the tech giant has already committed to expanding artificial intelligence.
